A standard 52-card deck is dealt: 13 cards to the dealer, 12 to each of the two other players. The dealer goes first by discarding one card, then play moves clockwise. On your turn you draw from the stock pile or pick the top discard, then lay down melds — sets of three or more same-rank cards or runs of three or

more same-suit consecutive cards — before discarding one card face-up. Face cards count ten points, aces one point, and number cards at face value. The round ends when someone empties their hand for a Tongits win, when the stock runs out and the active player calls a fight, or when any player calls a fight after a successful meld. A meld is a valid combination of cards laid face-up on the table — either a set of three or more cards of the same rank, or a run of three or more consecutive same-suit cards.

What does deadwood mean in Tongits?

Deadwood refers to the unmelded cards still held in your hand at the end of a round. Their face values are added up; the player with the lowest deadwood total wins a fight.

What is a Tongits win?

A Tongits win happens when a player empties their entire hand by melding and discarding all cards. It is an outright win regardless of the other players' deadwood counts.

What is a fight call in Tongits?

Any player who has laid down at least one meld can declare a fight at the start of their turn instead of drawing. All players reveal remaining cards and the lowest deadwood total wins.

What does burning the stock mean?

When the draw pile runs out of cards, the round ends automatically. The active player at that point is treated as having called a fight, and deadwood counts determine the winner.

What is a sapaw in Tongits?

Sapaw is when a player adds cards to an existing meld already on the table — either their own or another player's. Laying off valid cards this way reduces your deadwood count.

The dealer receives 13 cards at the start. Each of the two other players receives 12 cards. The dealer then discards one card immediately to begin the round, so all active hands shrink from there.

Yes. If you meld and discard every card in your hand, you win outright with a Tongits win. You do not need to call a fight — the round ends the moment your last card hits the discard pile.

When two players hold the same deadwood count after a fight is called, the player who called the fight does not automatically win. The tied player who did not call the fight takes the round.

No. A fight can only be called by a player who has already successfully laid down at least one meld during the game. A player with no melds on the table cannot initiate a fight.
